It was not unusual in South Dakota in the 1950's for kids (especially rural kids) to leave school after the 8th grade so this family was understandably proud of their four high school graduates. Understanding begins with seeing history through the lens of the time.
"I remember the stripes on her back from being whipped" is the way my mother always began the story of Great grandmother Susan. Her look of quiet determination hides a lifetime of hardship and prompted me to include this text from a poem by Langston Hughes in this composition. This picture pays homage to those women on whose shoulders I stand.

Graduation is always an accomplishment but how much more so when one is simultaneously working full time, raising a family, and doing the myriad other things grown folks do. It is an accomplishment at age 22 and it is an accomplishment at 45. It is never too late.
Pilgrimage is a precious bounty for Bahai's. This image keeps alive memories of this family's nine day pilgrimage to Haifa, Israel, the site of the world headquarters of the Bahai faith. They had wonderful photos from which to choose for these striking prints.
